FROESE STRIKES; PLOSZAJ STOPS 20 AS ‘RAYS SHUTOUT KILLER BEES 1-0

Dec 27, 2013

HIDALGO, TX – Kyle Froese scored the only goal of the game in the first period and Forbes Ploszaj stopped all 20 shots he faced as the Corpus Christi IceRays came into Rio Grande Valley and shutout the Killer Bees 1-0 inside State Farm Arena on Saturday night.

Corpus Christi got on the board first as Kyle Froese stepped up at the left point to intercept a would be breakout pass by Luke Bafia.  Froese walked the puck in to the left wing circle and fired it through a brief screen and beat Killer Bees’ goaltender Nick Schmit for a 1-0 lead.  The goal was unassisted and came 11:27 of the opening frame.

At the end of the first period, the IceRays took two straight penalties and were able to kill off the two man advantage keeping their 1-0 lead over Rio Grande Valley through two periods of action.  After 40 minutes of action the Killer Bees had a 14-10 shot lead over the IceRays.

In the third period Corpus Christi denied numerous chances and when Rio Grande Valley pulled Nick Schmit late in regulation Luke McDiarmid came up with a clutch shot block with less than ten seconds left in the game to preserve the 1-0 shutout.

Forbes Ploszaj denied all 20 shots he faced in the win.

The IceRays are on the road next weekend as they take on the Amarillo Bulls.  Puck drops at 7:05PM, coverage begins at 6:50PM with the IceRays Pregame Show on 91.1FM KSGR, ksgr.org, ustream.com, and fasthockey.com.
