Feb 6, 2015

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The Corpus Christi IceRays of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) have acquired defenseman Matt Olson from the Minnesota Wilderness for future considerations. The IceRays now have 23 skaters on their roster with one week remaining until the trade deadline.

Olson, 19, played nine games with the Wilderness this season since his call-up from the Minnesota Flying Aces of the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL). In his 22 games with the Flying Aces, the Forest Lake, Minn., native recorded four goals and nine assists for 13 points with 35 penalty minutes and a -18 rating. Before joining the junior ranks, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound defenseman played four seasons at Totino-Grace High School, recording 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points with 73 penalty minutes and a +5 rating in 105 games.

“We were in need of some defensive depth, and Matt will give us some of that on the back end,” said IceRays head coach John Becanic. “Not only that, but he’ll add some good character to our locker room.”

Olson is expected to join the IceRays this weekend during their series against the Lone Star Brahmas. He will wear number five.

The IceRays reconvene their season series against the Brahmas tonight at 7:05 p.m. from the American Bank Center on Hockey & Heels Night, presented by Mattress Firm, Prime Real Estate, and The Results Companies. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsJuice.com, FASTHockey.com, and 87.7 FM in-arena.
