Oct 3, 2014

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The Corpus Christi IceRays came up with a game-winner toward the end of the third period to win 2-1 over the Wenatchee Wild from the American Bank Center. With the win, the IceRays take the season series with just two games remaining of the five between the two teams.

After a penalty-filled first period in which the IceRays killed off five Wild power plays, it was the IceRays that struck first late in the second period at 17:56. On a 5-on-3 power play, forward Tanner Lomsnes took a one-time slap shot from the right circle to rocket home his first of the season, giving the IceRays the lead, 1-0. Defenseman Anthony Cortese and forward Wes Michaud would earn assists.

Early in the third period, the Wild answered back with a goal of their own to even the scoreline, 1-1, just 4:05 into the final frame. Forward Joseph Kaszupski was credited with his first of the season with assists given to defenseman Ryan Chiasson and forward Dakota Raabe. The final blow came from IceRays forward Connor Kelly, who shoveled a back-handed shot goalward off a loose rebound, earning his first goal of the season at 13:48 and the game-winner for a final score, 2-1.

Wenatchee led in shots 24-22, and both teams combined for 13 power plays. The Wild went 0-for-7 on the man-advantage, and the IceRays converted 1-of-6 chances. The IceRays have killed off 25-straight penalties and 26 of their last 27 through their last six games.

IceRays goaltender Luke Pickar (1-2-0) earned his first win of the season, stopping 23 of 24 shots faced, and Wild netminder Michael Bullion (0-2-0) drops his second-straight decision, turning aside 20 of 22 shots.
