MYERS' EFFORT IN NET EARNS SOUTH DIVISION STAR OF THE WEEK

Oct 6, 2013

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA – Goaltending in a tough atmosphere such as Fairbanks is no easy task for a team, especially the netminder.  With the effort from this past weekend, the North American Hockey League has named IceRays goaltender Ben Myers the South Division Star of the Week.

“It definitely feels great to be picked as the South Division Star of the Week,” said Myers.  “It was an all-around team effort.”

On Friday night, the IceRays spoiled the home opener for Fairbanks with a 3-2 comeback victory over the NAHL leading IceDogs.  In the win, Myers stopped 48 of 50 shots put on net.  However, the Wisconsin native points all the credit to the crew in front of him all weekend long.

“The guys in front of me battled all weekend clearing players out of the shooting lanes allowing me to see the puck,” Myers added.  “We really battled as a team and I can't thank the boys enough for sacrificing their bodies to block shots in front of me all weekend long.”

In Saturday’s game, Myers replaced Forbes Ploszaj in net at the 11:23 mark of the first period and stopped 24 of 25 shots in the remaining two and a half periods.

“Ben was a big factor in us winning Friday night,” said head coach John Becanic. “He also gave us a chance Saturday to stay in the game while our players fought hard against a very talented Fairbanks team. Ben battled hard on many saves and his big physical presence didn't allow many second chances.”

On the weekend, Myers had a goals against average of 1.60 along with a 96 save percentage.

The other players selected were (G) Aaron Nelson of Bismarck, (G) Kasimir Kaskisuo of the Minnesota Wilderness, and (F) Omar Mullan of Johnstown.

The IceRays are on the road this weekend as they take on the Kenai River Brown Bears.  Puck drops at 10:30PM CST, coverage begins at 10:15PM CST with the IceRays Pregame Show on 91.1FM KSGR, ksgr.org, ustream.com, and fasthockey.com.
