‘RAYS RALLY FALLS SHORT IN GAME TWO

Jul 21, 2011

In game two of their 2011 Chowder Cup Tournament, the Corpus Christi IceRays (0-2) dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Players First Hockey (2-0) in Foxboro on Friday afternoon.  Players First was built around many players from the North York Rangers from the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL).

Defenseman Colton Saucerman (1) scored on the power play while Seth Blair (1) scored with an extra attacker on the ice for the IceRays.

In a game featuring two 25-minute periods, Players First scored late in the opening frame when the IceRays could not clear the puck of their defensive zone.  Sloppy passing led to a turnover and hard wrist shot past netminder Pheonix Copley.  Aside from the one goal, Copley was stellar in the first period.

Corpus Christi would tie the game on a two-man advantage in the second period when Saucerman rifled a one-timed slap shot through bodies and into the cage.

Players First would rattle off two more tallies to grab the lead at 3-1.

It would stay that way until late in the game when Blair brought Corpus Christi to within one after a goalmouth scramble with 30 seconds left in the contest and goaltender Cameron Holland pulled.  The IceRays would threaten in the final seconds, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The IceRays will wrap up their Chowder Cup on Saturday at 11:10 AM CT when they take on Team Alberta while Players First will battle Patriot Hockey with a playoff berth on the line.
