RAYS’ REPORT #11: ICERAYS SWEEP KENAI RIVER; AMARILLO UP NEXT

Nov 26, 2012

After being swept last weekend by the Fairbanks IceDogs, the Corpus Christi IceRays returned the favor to the Kenai River Brown Bears taking both games on the weekend 7-3 on Friday, and 3-2 in overtime, Saturday night.  Rudy Sulmonte and Emil Romig led the squad with five points apiece.  This weekend, the IceRays head north to the Texas Panhandle for a pair of games against the defending South Division champion Amarillo Bulls on Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon.

GAME #23 – 11-23-12: Corpus Christi 7-3 Kenai RiverRudy Sulmonte scored twice and Hayden Stewart stopped 32 shots as the Corpus Christi IceRays easily handled the Kenai River Brown Bears 7-3 in front of 3,068 fans.  Sulmonte started the scoring at 5:37 of the first period with assists from Wayland Williams and Emil Romig to take a 1-0 lead.  After Brian Berry tied the game for the Brown Bears, the IceRays responded when Perry D’Arrisso swung a pass to the front of the net that deflected past goaltender Gustaf Johansson to take a 2-1 lead.  Charles Baldwin made it 3-1 on a breakaway goal after he slipped between the Kenai River defense.  Baldwin walked in and backhanded the puck behind Johansson at the 11:47 mark of the first.  Emil Romig added a goal while short-handed just 48 seconds into the second frame.  Romig wired a wrister over the shoulder of Johansson for a 4-1 advantage.  Johansson was replaced by Sean Healy after that goal.  Kenai River split the lead in half on the power-play at 5:25 of the second courtesy of Jake Bushey.  Baldwin struck again, this time with an assist going around the defender and finding an open AJ Jarosz in the slot at 13:04 of the second for a 5-2 lead.  Sulmonte picked up his second of the game on an interception just inside the blue line skating it in blasting it over Healy’s shoulder increasing the lead to four goals.  Brandon Berkley finished the scoring spree for Corpus Christi with 13:10 left in the game finding a seam in the goaltender Healy to take a 7-2 IceRays lead.  Kenai River tacked on a goal late off the stick of Ryan WalkerHayden Stewart blocked away 32 of 35 shots.

GAME #24 – 11-24-12: Corpus Christi 3-2 (OT) Kenai River – Saturday night may not have been as easy for the Corpus Christi IceRays, however, Rudy Sulmonte provided the goal they needed in overtime to cap off a sweep of the Kenai River Brown Bears 3-2 inside the American Bank Center.  Perry D’Arrisso kick started the scoring on the power-play just 4:22 into the game from behind the goal line as he banked the puck off the back of goaltender Sean Healy for a 1-0 IceRays lead.  In the second period, Dylan Meier knotted the game at a goal apiece.  After an interception, Meier wristed a shot past goalie Ben Myers to even the score 1-1.  The Brown Bears took the first lead of the weekend off the stick of Alex Jackstadt with 3:46 to go in the second.  After a pile up in front of the net, Jackstadt found the loose puck and beat Myers for the lead.  That lead didn’t last long when Charles Baldwin put on the boosters going right around the defender and finding a seam through the pads of Healy just 21 seconds after.  No scoring in the third period forced overtime.  Rudy Sulmonte capped off the victory only 25 seconds into overtime ripping a shot top shelf for the 3-2 win.  Ben Myers stopped 32 of 34 shots in the victory.
