RAYS’ REPORT #12: ICERAYS HAND BULLS FIRST HOME LOSS IN WEEKEND SPLIT

Dec 2, 2012

After the IceRays swept the Kenai River Brown Bears last weekend, they traveled North to Amarillo and picked up a weekend split with a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon, delivering the Bulls their first regulation loss on home ice this season.  Charles Baldwin and Mike Economos shined in Sunday’s win combining for five points inside the Amarillo Civic Center.

GAME #25 – 12-1-12: Corpus Christi 2-4 Amarillo – A late power-play goal in the third, along with a controversial strike in the second period proved too much for the IceRays on Saturday night in Amarillo as the Bulls took game one 4-2 inside the Amarillo Civic Center.  Corpus Christi got on the board in the first period when AJ Jarosz dropped the puck for Perry D’Arrisso who put the IceRays ahead 1-0.  The IceRays took a 2-0 lead when Emil Romig hit Rudy Sulmonte with a pass on a two-on-one rush, sliding it passed Paul Berrafato at the 11:22 mark of the first.  In the second, it was all Amarillo and started 6:11 into the period off the stick of Mike Davis on a rebound splitting the lead in half, 2-1.  Amarillo tied the game on a questionable goal that seemed to go off the inside of the post and back out.  Originally ruled no goal, was overturned by the goal judge to tie the game 2-2.  Tyler Rostenkowski put the Bulls ahead 3-2 for good with 3:39 left in the second with the lone assist to Matt Sieckhaus.  The lone goal in the third period came on the power-play with just 1:15 left in the game.  Ryan Cole was hit with a pass from John Rey and had a wide open net for a two goal lead.  Hayden Stewart stopped 26 of 30 in the loss.

GAME #26 – 12-2-12: Corpus Christi 3-2 Amarillo – The Corpus Christi IceRays, backed by Charles Baldwin’s three points rebounded on Sunday afternoon and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Amarillo Bulls, handing them their first loss inside the Amarillo Civic Center this season.  Corpus Christi started the scoring when AJ Jarosz swung a puck to the net that found a way passed Bulls netminder Chad Catt for a 1-0 lead just 1:12 into the game.  After leading 1-0 through 20muin of play, Charles Baldwin kicked off the second frame with a goal 12 seconds into the period.  Mike Economos fed Baldwin on a two-on-one.  Baldwin took and pass and deked the goaltender Catt for a 2-0 advantage.  Eric Purcell then scored what was the eventual game winner 6:21 into the period when a loose puck slid through the crease right onto the stick of Purcell who buried the third and final goal for the IceRays.  The power-play tally was assisted by Brandon Smith  and Charles Baldwin.  After a scrum, the IceRays were on a power-play, but it was Amarillo converting when TJ Sarcona slid in a pass on a short-handed two-on-one passed Hayden Stewart to get the defending South Division champions on the board.  John Rey made it interesting when he fired what seemed like a harmless floater to the net.  The puck changed direction and found a seam in Stewart to pull the Bulls within a goal with 5:07 left in the game.  Corpus Christi held on for the 3-2 win, and the weekend split with Amarillo on the road.  Hayden Stewart stopped 37 of 39 shots in the win.
