RAYS REPORT #15: ICERAYS SPLIT TO END 2011

The Corpus Christi IceRays ended 2011 by splitting a series against the Wichita Falls Wildcats inside the American Bank Center.  The IceRays won 3-2 on Friday night, and then dropped the finale 2-1 on a bad break.   

GAME #1 – 12-30-11: Corpus Christi 3-2 Wichita Falls – The IceRays trailed 1-0 after the first period as Tanner Fahlstedt was awarded a penalty shot and converted 15:44 into regulation giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.  The IceRays scored the next three goals starting when Michael Dery scored his fourth goal in three games early in the second period to tie the game at one.  The IceRays notched a power-play goal courtesy of Travis Maxwell 9:30 into the second period to give Corpus Christi a 2-1 lead.  The IceRays led 2-1 after two periods and increased their lead when Joe Smereck picked up his own rebound beating JoJo Jeanetta 2:01 into the final period.  The Wildcats made it interesting with plenty of time left in the game when Nick Szopinski pulled Wichita Falls within one goal.  The IceRays held on for the 3-2 win and Anthony Stolarz stopped 30 of 32 shots.

 

GAME #2 – 12-31-11: Corpus Christi 1-2 Wichita Falls The next night Corpus Christi took the lead off the stick of Michael Dery who took a rebound shot from Beau Walker and beat Matt Leon at the 14:21 mark of the first period for a 1-0 lead.  It was Dery’s fifth goal in four games.  Tanner Fahlstedt scored his second goal in as many games just 3:52 into the second period to tie the game 1-1.  There was no scoring until just six minutes remained when Renato Engler threw a puck to the front of the crease and banked off Chris Taff into the net for the eventual game winning goal.

DERY ON FIRE…Michael Dery continued his scoring streak as he netted his fifth goal in the past four on Saturday night. 

BAD BREAK…The IceRays caught a bad break on Saturday night that caused the Wildcats to pick up the 2-1 win.  Renato Engler centered a pass off of Chris Taff into the net late in regulation. 

MATT WEIS TO USHL…IceRays forward Matthew Weis was traded to the Green Bay Gamblers.  The plan is for Weis to play ten games, which will give the Gamblers right’s to him next year.  He scored two goals and added two assists in just his second game with the Gamblers.
