RAYS’ REPORT #21: WEEKEND SPLIT; PINK IN THE RINK THIS WEEKEND

Feb 13, 2012

Corpus Christi scooped up a win on Saturday night to secure a weekend split with the Wichita Falls Wildcats as the IceRays now set their eyes on “Pink in the Rink” night this upcoming Friday night.  The IceRays fell on Friday night to the Wildcats 3-1, however, rebounded on Saturday night for a big 4-2 victory with help from Jonathan Grebosky who notched a hat-trick in the win.

GAME #1 – 02-10-12: Corpus Christi 1-3 Wichita Falls – The IceRays have struggled in the first period several times this season and it continued on Friday night at Corpus Christi took the ice with the Wildcats in the final series of the year.  Brennan Parker picked up a loose puck on a scramble in front of the net and fired it into an open net while Anthony Stolarz was on the ice just 1:49 into the game for a 1-0 lead.  The IceRays took a penalty and Wichita Falls capitalized when Renato Engler completed a wrap-around goal to take a 2-0 advantage 10:06 into the game.  There was no scoring in the second period and when the IceRays took another penalty, this time they were the ones scoring.  Danny Fetzer forced an interception at center ice and went in on a breakaway beating Matt Leon glove side to pull Corpus Christi within a goal.  With under a minute to go the IceRays pulled the goalie and Zach Pochiro sealed the win with 44 seconds to go with an empty-net goal.

GAME #2 – 02-11-12: Corpus Christi 4-2 Wichita Falls With the Jackalopes winning in overtime on Friday night, the IceRays needed a win badly and it showed in Saturday night’s game.  Phil Pietroniro scored a highlight reel goal dancing through the defenseman and wristing a shot through the legs of Matt Leon to give the IceRays a 1-0 lead midway through period one.  Jonathan Grebosky began a three goal night scoring in the first frame with 6:43 left to go as he scooped up a puck and beat Leon from the slot.  His second goal of the night on the power-play just 1:45 into the second period to push Corpus Christi out to a 3-0 lead.  The comeback began for the Wildcats as Zach Pochiro scored two straight goals; the second came 30 seconds into the final period to bring Wichita Falls within a goal.  There was no scoring after that until Grebosky completed the hat-trick on an empty net goal with 37 seconds remaining in the game.
