RAYS REPORT #3: WEEKEND SWEEP

The Corpus Christi IceRays rebounded this past weekend sweeping their first series of the weekend as they beat New Mexico 8-7 on Saturday and 8-1 on Sunday.  With the wins, Corpus Christi sits in fourth place in the South Division with a 6-5-0 record and 12 points. The IceRays host the second place Texas Tornado tomorrow and Thursday night. 

GAME #1 – 10-15-11: Corpus Christi 8-7 New Mexico – The IceRays scored seven goals in the second period taking a 7-3 lead.  However in the third period the New Mexico Mustangs put four goals up, after an IceRays strike, to pull within a goal.  The IceRays held on for the 8-7 win.    Seth Blair recorded two goals in the game including the go ahead goal in the second period.  Blair also notched the eventual game winner in the third period.

GAME #2 – 10-16-11:Corpus Christi 8-1 New MexicoOT– Corpus Christi came out flying in Sunday afternoon’s affair.  After a shaky third period the night before the IceRays led 3-0 after the first period of play and never looked back from there. In the third period, the IceRays scored five unanswered goals, two of those by Joe Smereck on route to an 8-1 victory.

BRICK WALL…Anthony Stolarz played an unbelievable game last weekend against Amarillo putting aside 44 of 46 shots in the 3-2 overtime win for the IceRays. On Sunday, Stolarz stopped 21 of 22 shots securing an 8-1 victory.  He maintains a 2.12 goals against average, and a save percentage of .932. 

HELPING HAND…Matthew Weis continues to set up others for goals. Weis leads the team in assists with eight, while adding two goals to his point total. 

STAYING HOT… Eric Purcell has a thing for scoring overtime winning goals, who wouldn’t?  Purcell once again ended a game in overtime this past Saturday night after deflecting a Justin Lutsch shot from the point for his team leading fifth goal of the season.  He also added two goals on Sunday in the 8-1 win over New Mexico.  Purcell has recorded two points in each of the past three games.
