RAYS’ REPORT #9: WEEKEND SPLIT WITH TEXAS

Nov 11, 2012

After dropping the first contest of the two game set 4-1 to the Texas Tornado, the IceRays rebounded on Friday night coming away with a 4-2 victory powered by three shorthanded goals, two of which came on the same penalty kill.  This weekend, Corpus Christi returns home as they host the Fairbanks IceDogs on Friday for Recycling Night and Saturday for Stars & Stripes Night.

GAME #19 – 11-08-12: Corpus Christi 1-4 Texas – Four goals in the second period by the defending National Champions propelled the Texas Tornado over the IceRays 4-1 on Thursday night inside the Dr. Pepper Arena.  After no scoring in the first frame, Nick Neville fired a shot past goaltender Hayden Stewart on the man advantage for a 1-0 lead just 50 seconds into the second period.  Leo Lumm made it 2-0 on a rebound goal assisted by CJ Reuschlein and Brett Heikkila at the 10:07 mark of the second.  Jason Eddy then took a shot from the left wing circle that landed on the stick of Michael Hoy after a rebound who picked up his only goal of the night at 11:38  to take a 3-0 lead.  The final strike of the contest for Texas came with 1:13 left in the middle period.  Brandon Hawkins added to his team lead in goals scoring from the top of the circles to move the lead to 4-0.  Corpus Christi avoided a shutout in the final period as Brandon Smith ripped a shot past Hunter Leisner just 4:50 into the period to pull the IceRays within three goals.  Assists were credited to Emil Romig and Wayland WilliamsHayden Stewart stopped 26 of 30 shots through two periods until he was replaced by Ben Myers in the third who put aside all eight shots.

GAME #20 – 11-09-12: Corpus Christi 4-2 Texas –  The Corpus Christi IceRays rebounded big on Friday night against the Texas Tornado, scoring two short-handed goals in the same penalty kill en route to a 4-2 victory over the defending National Champions.  The IceRays started the scoring while on the penalty kill.  Rudy Sulmonte brought a rush back and fired a shot from the right wing circle beating Hunter Leisner for a 1-0 lead at 6:33 of the first period.  Just 36 seconds later, on the same penalty kill, Charles Baldwin forced a turnover and went in all alone beating Leisner top shelf for a 2-0 lead, and another short-handed tally.  Texas scored a short-handed goal of their own to split the lead in half.  A John Roisum shot went off the shin guards of Andrew Mayer who walked in on a breakaway and slid the puck past Ben Myers 11:20 into the game.  In the second period, Texas tied the game on a power-play that carried over from the first period.  Just 50 second in, Justin Greenberg struck to tie the game at two apiece.  Corpus Christi regained the lead when the puck found its way onto the stick of Jalen Schulz after a turnover.  Schulz found a seam and beat Leisner for another one goal IceRays lead.  In the final period, the Tornado were awarded a power-play late in regulation and pulled the goalie to have a two player advantage.  After numerous chances fell short, Mike Economos sealed the win with an empty net goal.  Ben Myers put aside 31 of 33 shots in the win.
