THOMSON NAMED TO NAHL TOP PROSPECTS TOURNAMENT

Feb 21, 2017

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Due to an opening on the roster, Corpus Christi IceRays forward David Thomson has been named to Team South at the 2017 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich.

“We’re really happy for David to earn this recognition and head to the Top Prospect Tournament,” said IceRays head coach Brad Flynn. “He’s been a very reliable source of scoring this season after coming off of two years in Canadian Junior A hockey.  Recently, he’s really found his game and has been an important aspect of this team during our recent run and playoff push. We wish him the best next week and hope he does well.”

Thomson, 19, has emerged over the course of this season one of the team’s top scorers in his first year with the team. The Vaughan, Ont. native started his third junior season on a strong note before hitting a rough patch midway through the season. However, he’s hit his stride during the team’s recent run, coming off a seven-game point streak, during which he recorded four goals and six assists for ten points while also scoring goals in four of his last six games en route to one of the best individual runs on the team during their seven-game win streak. The 6-foot, 189-pound center now leads the team with 17 goals and has surged up the scoring rankings, now sitting fourth in points with 29 through 43 games.

“I’m really excited to be going,” said Thomson upon hearing the news. “I knew coming into the league that this was something that I needed to get into if I want to play NCAA Division I hockey, so it’s very exciting. Everything happens for a reason, so I’ve got to go in there with that mentality and show everyone why I’m there. It’s a nice little break from what we’ve been building here to play a different style and just have a fun couple of days.”

He joins Team South for two games next Monday and Tuesday in Michigan beginning on Monday, Feb. 27 at 6:00 p.m. CST against the U-17 U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP) followed by a meeting with Team Central on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 1:00 p.m. CST. All six games during the week will be broadcast live on Hockey TV.

The IceRays continue their four-week home stand on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7:05 p.m. from the American Bank Center when they open the weekend against the Lone Star Brahmas.
