Aug 2, 2019

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Corpus Christi IceRays, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), announced Friday the hiring of Shawn Sramek as Assistant Coach. Sramek will join new Head Coach/GM Al Rooney’s staff in time for the team’s training camp later this month in College Station, Texas.

Sramek, 25, spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach, video coach and recruiting coordinator with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies U18 AAA (T1EHL/HPHL), as well as working the past two years in the NAHL as Head Scout & Recruiter for the Lone Star Brahmas.

“After a brief but intense coaching search, we’re really pleased with the end result of Shawn joining our organization,” said Rooney. “He is young, proficient with video and skills development, and has five years of experience with one of the top midget programs in the country. We feel it is the perfect fit for our needs and the direction our organization is looking to go in.

“I’m really looking forward to working alongside Shawn this season and beyond, and confident the players and fans will welcome him enthusiastically as well.”

With the Grizzlies, the Clarkston, Mich., native was responsible for recruiting and developing players, including 25 players reaching the NCAA Division I level. On the ice, Sramek managed skill sessions, defensive core and special teams. Off the ice, he created individual player development plans, coordinated travel and game scheduling, and created individual, team and pre-scout video presentations.

With the Brahmas, Sramek identified player prospects throughout the United States and Canada, scouting various leagues and showcases, as well as assisting the coaching staff with various efforts at main camp.

“I am very excited to be part of the IceRays and to have an opportunity to work in this first-class organization,” said Sramek. “Throughout the process, I had many conversations with Al and it was apparent that we would be a good fit to work together in developing a high-quality product on and off the ice. I’m extremely grateful and eager to get started with the team and become part of the Corpus Christi community.”

The 22nd season of IceRays hockey in the Coastal Bend starts Friday, Sept. 13 at the Topeka Pilots. The home opener takes place Thursday, Oct. 10 against the Odessa Jackalopes. Puck drop at American Bank Center is set for 7:05 PM. Season ticket memberships are on sale now, while single game tickets will go on sale at a later date.
