Veteran broadcaster brings AHL, IIHF, NCAA, USHL experience to Gulf Coast

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Corpus Christi IceRays, proud members of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), announced Tuesday the hiring of Rob Sanderson as Director of Broadcasting & Media Relations.

“We are extremely fortunate to be adding Rob to our team,” said IceRays General Manager Michael Wood. “He is a gifted broadcaster who has also shown himself to be an excellent representative with local media members. I am looking forward to his telling of the IceRays’ story, both during games and via our website and social media.”

Sanderson will handle play-by-play duties for all home and away IceRays games, including coverage on Sportsradio Corpus Christi (KSIX-AM/FM), HockeyTV and Mixlr. Sanderson will also manage the IceRays’ digital presence, handle media requests and assist with various other duties including graphic design and video.

The Rochester, N.Y., native spent the past three seasons with the Chicago Steel, leading the organization to 2017-18 USHL Media Team of the Year honors. Sanderson has American Hockey League play-by-play experience, filling in for both the Rochester Americans and Utica Comets. From 2012-2015, he served as the Americans’ radio host, providing pre-game, intermission and post-game coverage. Sanderson’s other hockey broadcast highlights include calling the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship in 2010 and 2015, as well as serving as the voice of the Nazareth Golden Flyers (NCAA Div. III) and providing TV color analysis for the Atlantic Hockey Tournament (NCAA Div. I).

“We are very excited to have someone of Rob’s caliber on our staff,” said IceRays Assistant General Manager Cassidy Lange. “Following in the footsteps of previous IceRays broadcasters like Josh Bogorad, Rob Lippolis and Collin Schuck, I have no doubt he will continue the rich tradition established here in Corpus Christi, while also focusing on growing our social media presence and working with our local media partners. I am very excited to work alongside him.”

Sanderson’s overtime call of Chicago’s 2017 Clark Cup victory was featured on various media outlets including NHL Network, FOX 32 Chicago, NHL.com and FOX Sports Radio. Additionally, his media efforts landed the Steel coverage across Chicago media outlets as well as ESPN, TSN, NBC Sports, USA Today, Yahoo! Sports and Sports Illustrated, and the team’s social media presence grew exponentially over three seasons. He also served as an on-camera host for USHLTV at the Clark Cup Final (2016, 2018) and NHL Draft (2016, 2017, 2018). Sanderson graduated from Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication in Philadelphia.
