FUTURE ICERAYS FORWARD BRYER COMMITS TO MERCYHURST

Feb 21, 2014

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – A player to watch out for next year as a member of the Corpus Christi IceRays in 2014-15 is Nathan Bryer and he has already signed to play at a Division 1 school for the 2016 season after announcing his commitment to Mercyhurst University out of the Atlantic Hockey Conference.

“Committing to a division one school is a dream come true,” said Bryer.  “It has been my goal as I developed as a player. I couldn't be more honored and excited to commit to a school like Mercyhurst, it feels like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.”

Earlier in the season, the IceRays signed Bryer to a tender for next season and his expectations are high heading into his first year with the ‘Rays.  “My expectations for next season as an IceRay are to continue to improve my game and create a winning culture.  Fans in Corpus can expect a very honest work ethic out of me as well as adding some skill to the lineup.”

“We couldn't be happier for Nathan and his family,” said head coach John Becanic.  “This is a great accomplishment for such a young player.  Rick Ellison has done an outstanding job of identifying young talent and ensuring the future of the IceRays is bright with the signing of Nathan.”

Bryer was named captain of Detroit Compuware U14 and Victory Honda U16 along with being named the assistant captain of Victory Honda U18.  Last season, Bryer had a career high in points with 46pts in 35 games.

Even though the Division 1 commitment is out of the way, Bryer still knows there is work to be done.  “I want to become faster as well as working on getting my shots off quick before going into Mercyhurst,” Bryer added.  “I still have a lot of work to do to continue to develop as a player and be ready to play at Mercyhurst University.”

This season Mercyhurst is on a roll and sits atop the Atlantic Hockey Conference with an in-conference record of 15-4-5 and overall record of 17-12-6.  Former IceRays defenseman Mychal Monteith currently plays at Mercyhurst while former forward Tommaso Bucci has committed to play for the Lakers as well.
