HIDALGO, TEXAS – The Corpus Christi IceRays (26-17-5) allowed three goals in the third period and could not cash in on opportunities in their 4-3 loss to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (21-20-8) on Friday night from State Farm Arena. The IceRays drop their second-straight South Texas Vo-Tech Cup and remain winless in Hidalgo this season.
Though the IceRays went down on a penalty toward the end of the first period, forward Wes Michaud found a feed from his own defensive end, resulting in a breakaway goal shorthanded at 15:22 to give the IceRays a 1-0 lead. The IceRays hit the post twice in that period and could not cash in on some strong chances.
The Killer Bees tied the game, 1-1, early in the second period on a poke by forward Elliot Lorraine by the sprawling IceRays netminder at 2:49. More chances came the IceRays’ way in the second with open nets for forwards Tanner Lomsnes and Joe Chitwood, but luck was not on the road team’s side. Later, at 15:30, Michaud skated to the left side of Killer Bees netminder Ben Johansson and patiently waited as he slipped the puck by his left leg to take a 2-1 lead for the IceRays.
The Killer Bees found their stride in the third period. On the back end of a double-minor penalty against IceRays forward Nathan Bryer, Killer Bees defenseman Evan Bell knocked in a power play goal at 1:50 to tie the game once again, 2-2. The edge went to the Killer Bees, 3-2, at 14:47 with forward Stathis Soumelidis also shoving home a goal in the IceRays crease. Exactly three minutes later, forward Dallas Gerads found the back of the net to double the lead, 4-2. With netminder Andrew Lindgren pulled, the IceRays found life at 19:36 with the first-career NAHL goal by Matt Olson to draw within one, 4-3, but the late charge wasn’t enough to grab the win.
Johansson (12-8-4) picked up the win for the Killer Bees, stopping 18 of 21 shots faced, while Lindgren (19-10-3) garnered the loss, saving 23 of 27 shots against. The IceRays play their final road game against the Killer Bees on Saturday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. from State Farm Arena.
