SUNGOD GRAPHICS CREATES ANOTHER 'RAYS HELMET

Dec 17, 2013

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Robert Howell of Sungod Graphics has once again completed another goalie helmet for the Corpus Christi IceRays.  The tradition started back in the professional days and has carried over to the NAHL team.

“I believe this is the 5th mask I've painted for the IceRays,” said Robert Howell of Sungod Graphics.  “The first being for Kris Tebbs and I've done one a year ever since including Anthony Stolarz and last years for Hayden Stewart   This time I worked with Forbes Ploszaj, who was actually very hand on with his mask.  He had a good understanding of the mask painting process and knew exactly what he wanted it to look like.”

For Ploszaj, he had a wide variety of ideas for the mask.  “I got some ideas based on ex-IceRays helmets and the design layout was based off if Ilya Bryzgalov’s mask when he played for the Pheonix Coyotes,” said Ploszaj.  “I was inspired to put the USS Lexington on my mask because of its history in the war and the coral reef with the IceRay represents our mascots habitat! I incorporated the lightning to make the mask for intense and the ribbons give the mask some history to it.”

As for any helmet that Howell designs, there is always one big challenge he faces.  That is having the final product match the vision Ploszaj had.  “He wanted a portal on one side with a underwater scene with an actual sting ray. The other side has an image of the USS Lexington in a fire fight during WWII. To top it off we put the IceRays logo on the forehead and covered the mask in lightning, which is an element Forbes has carried over many of his masks.”

“Check out the Sungod Graphics website at www.sungodgraphics.com or follow them on Facebook. Sungod Graphics would also like to thank Matt at Austin Paintworks (http://austinpaintworks.com/)who did the final clear coat on Forbes mask.”
