CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Lone Star Brahmas battled back with three goals over the final 10 minutes of regulation Saturday to defeat the Corpus Christi IceRays, winning by a 4-2 final for a second-consecutive night.
Matt Guerra led the way for the Brahmas with a hand in each of Lone Star’s first three goals (1+2) before Eric Huss added an empty net goal with 1:12 remaining to secure the two-goal victory for the visitors.
Lone Star’s CJ Walker opened the scoring with a shot from the left circle at 5:21 of the first period.
Logan Ommen notched both of the IceRays’ goals in a five-minute span (2:18, 7:18) in the second period, scoring twice from near the top of the crease.
Midway through the third period, Guerra spun a pass from behind the net to Will Stromp, who tied the game for the Brahmas with a power play goal at 10:26. Guerra then gave the Brahmas the lead at 15:24, and Huss added the empty-net tally in the game’s closing minutes.
Jeremy Forman made 25 saves for the IceRays.
The Brahmas (39-9-0-1, 79 pts) have won 17 of their past 18 games and finished their 12-game season series against the IceRays with a 10-2-0-0 record. Their only loss since mid-December came at the hands of the IceRays last weekend (Feb. 14) in North Richland Hills.
The fourth-largest crowd of the season (2,803) came out to the American Bank Center for what was Heart Night with the American Heart Association, raising money through a silent auction and post-game IceRays throwback jersey auction.
The IceRays (15-29-3-4, 37 pts.) now enter their third of four bye weeks this season before returning to action with their first of two March weekend trips to Albuquerque to take on the New Mexico Ice Wolves. Puck drop on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7 is at 8:30 p.m. CT (7:30 p.m. MT).
