ICERAYS PULL OFF 3-1 WIN AGAINST BROWN BEARS

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—The Corpus Christi IceRays grinded out a 3-1 win against the Kenai River Brown Bears on Friday at the American Bank Center. The IceRays (5-7-1, 11 pts), ended a two-game losing skid, while the Brown Bears (8-6-0-1, 17 pts) have now lost two of their last three games.

The IceRays pounced early in the first period on a Kyle Moore goal, 45 seconds into the game to give Corpus Christi a 1-0 lead. The 20-year-old from Charlotte, NC has scored goals in back-to-back games following Friday’s win.

The Brown Bears responded with a JJ Boucher goal at the 7:06 mark in the opening frame to tie the game 1-1.

Although the score remained deadlocked after the first period, the IceRays heavily controlled the shots on goal mark through 20 minutes, outshooting the Brown Bears 19-8 in the first.

The IceRays outshot Kenai 46-19 overall in the win on Friday.

The second period featured scrappy Kenai play, resulting in four Brown Bears penalties, however, no goals were scored by the IceRays power play unit. Corpus Christi finished the game 0-6 on the man advantage, while the Brown Bears were unsuccessful in two tries.

Brown Bears goaltender Gavin Enright turned in a season high 45 saves in the loss. The loss handed the 19-year-old his second loss over his last six starts, moving him to a 5-2-0-0-1 record through eight games played.

IceRays goaltender Akira Schmid made 18 saves on 19 shots faced in his first start in the North American Hockey League. The 18-year-old draftee of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils made his return to junior hockey, following his most recent outing as a member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League on September 29th.

The IceRays ended the game on goals scored by Blake Bennett (GWG), and an empty net goal scored by Jake Stella to seal the 3-1 win.

Bennett with the goal enters Saturday’s finale against the Brown Bears with four goals in his last six games played.

The IceRays continue their season long 13-game homestand with the second game of the weekend set against the Brown Bears on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the American Bank Center. The IceRays host a “Navy Day” practice jersey auction on Saturday with the proceeds to benefit the USO of South Texas and the USS Lexington.
