Magic Number Falls to Four After Home Stand
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — A three-point weekend has strengthened the Corpus Christi IceRays hold on fourth place in the South Division with just six games remaining in the regular season. The IceRays (27-20-6, 60 points) capped the weekend with a dominant 5–1 victory over Amarillo, extending their lead in the race for home-ice advantage in the opening round of the Robertson Cup Playoffs to six points.
Three playoff positions in the South Division are still undecided as the regular season enters its final stretch. By earning three of a possible four points against Amarillo (42 points), the IceRays not only boosted their own standing but also benefited from results around the division.
Both Shreveport and Oklahoma sit tied at 54 points after the Warriors picked up a single point in an overtime loss over the weekend. Odessa is on the outside looking in with 47 points with eight games remaining in their season. If the playoffs began today, the IceRays would face the fifth-place team in a best-of-three opening-round series.
With the recent results around the division, the IceRays magic number to clinch a spot in the Robertson Cup Playoffs now sits at just four points. Any combination of IceRays points earned or points dropped by the teams chasing them that totals four will officially secure Corpus Christi a postseason berth.
At the top of the division, Lone Star (77 points) continues to lead the pack while holding multiple games in hand on most teams. New Mexico (69 points) and El Paso (64 points) are battling for the remaining spots in the top three, which include a coveted first-round bye.
With the season winding down, it appears the final three playoff spots in the South Division will likely be claimed by Corpus Christi, Oklahoma, and Shreveport.
The IceRays turn their attention to Lone Star this weekend as they hit the road for a two-game series against the Brahmas March 20 and 21. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT both nights. Tune in to the games live on NAHLtv or listen for free on Retro Radio CC with the pregame show kicking off 15 minutes ahead of puck drop.
