SCOUTING NEW MEXICO

The Ice Wolves have had a tough start to the season after dropping two of three against Corpus Christi and picking up just one point during the NAHL Showcase. However, they come into a building where they won all four games last season which included at least three goals in each game and a pair of wins after regulation. The top line of Bryce Johnson, Ethan Hull, and Andrew Hull have done the majority of damage offensively for New Mexico early this season. They each have four points in the first six games, and combined for eight points in the first series against the IceRays a few weeks ago. The Ice Wolves deployed Goaltenders Jackson Fuller and Brendan Holahan in the first series, Corpus Christi may get a look at Gavin Schahn as well who appeared in a game at the showcase last week.

SCOUTING CORPUS CHRISTI

The IceRays enter the weekend second in the South Division trailing Amarillo by one point after their best start in franchise history. Corpus Christi has a trio of players with seven points including two Forwards Stepan Kuznetsov and Pierson Sobush followed by Defenseman Max Ranstrom. Ranstrom is currently tied for third among defensemen scoring in the NAHL this season after a goal and an assist in the showcase finale versus North Iowa.

You also can’t forget about Goalie Nikita Volsky and his impressive start to the season accumulating a 1.50 GAA and 0.952 SV% in his league high six starts this season. Volsky was named the NAHL South Division Star of the Week after making 62 saves on 63 shots faced in Blaine, including his first shutout of the season against Springfield. He ranks top 10 in all major statistical categories for goalies this season and hopes to find continued success against New Mexico this weekend.

ALWAYS WERE

Corpus Christi has nearly been perfect on the penalty kill this season, a much needed improvement from where they left off a year ago. The IceRays have been down a man 29 times this season which ranks 10th in the NAHL, but have killed off 28 of those 29 infractions for a 97% kill which ranks 3rd. The lone power play goal against came against New Mexico in the IceRays 5-2 win in the series finale in Albuquerque.
