Corpus Christi Suffers Third Consecutive Friday Night Defeat
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The Corpus Christi IceRays (29-23-6, 64 pts) saw their comeback bid fall short in a 4–2 loss to the Oklahoma Warriors (26-25-7) Friday night at the Blazers Ice Centre. Despite generating the majority of quality scoring chances, the IceRays were ultimately undone by a lack of execution, as missed opportunities proved costly.
“I thought our effort and the chances we generated were there, but at this point in the season it comes down to execution. We had opportunities to change the game and didn’t capitalize, and that’s the difference, said Head Coach Ryan Gil. Give credit to them, they finished their looks and we didn’t.”
The first period featured fast-paced action with very few whistles, as both teams came out with strong legs. Corpus Christi generated several quality chances but couldn’t solve Warrior’s goaltender Chris Prater, who stopped all 11 shots he faced to keep them off the scoreboard.
Oklahoma created its own opportunities and struck first, as Alex Duhon redirected a puck for his 10th goal of the season, giving the Warriors a 1–0 lead.
IceRays goaltender Gavin Melcher was equally busy, turning aside 13 shots in the opening 20 minutes to keep Corpus Christi within one.
Corpus Christi carried its strong play into the middle period, but so did Prater, who faced a game-high 16 shots in the frame. Against the run of play, an IceRays turnover behind Gavin Melcher led to a one-timer from the slot by Max Gagnon, extending Oklahoma’s lead to 2–0.
Corpus Christi stayed composed and stuck to its game plan, eventually drawing the first penalty of the night on Oklahoma. The IceRays controlled the zone for most of the power play but couldn’t convert. Moments after the penalty expired, Jeffrey Saul slipped a shot past Prater to cut the deficit to 2–1 on his second goal in his first four games with the club. Jonathon Pylypuik and Alexandr Skuratov picked up the assists, but Oklahoma carried a one-goal lead into the third period.
IceRays defenseman Sam Troutwine needed just 40 seconds in the final frame to tie the game, firing home a shot that deflected off a Warriors stick to make it 2–2. Shortly after the goal, severe weather in the area forced a 20-minute pause as fans and teams were instructed to shelter in place.
Oklahoma benefited from the break and emerged as the stronger side, outshooting Corpus Christi 16–11 in the third. With just under five minutes remaining during 4-on-4 play, Ben Osiashvilli set up Trent Burlison with a beautiful backdoor pass for the go-ahead goal.
Trailing 3–2, the IceRays had a prime opportunity after Oklahoma took back-to-back penalties, giving Corpus Christi a two-man advantage. The best chance came from defenseman Nick Evans, whose shot rang off the post behind Prater.
Corpus Christi pressed hard with the extra attacker in the final minute, but key defensive blocks preserved the lead. Alex Duhon added an empty-net goal to seal a 4–2 victory for the Warriors.
