Oklahoma City, OK (Jan. 27, 2023) – The Corpus Christi IceRays did not have their finest hour as they surrendered nine goals to the Oklahoma Warriors on Friday, January 27th at Blazers Ice Centre.
The Warriors were as advertised, coming out fast and physical to start the first period. It was Mikko Liukkonen who cashed in on a rebound in front for his first of the year to give the Warriors the 1-0 lead 6:37 into the first frame.
The IceRays killed off an early penalty and then got a power play opportunity later in the period. Nils Forselius was able to tip home a hard pass from Logan Neilson for his first goal as an IceRay to tie the game at one.
The second period did not start off as planned for the IceRays as Mikko Liukkonen capitalized on a fortuitous bounce at center ice and found himself in on a breakaway, beating Mukas Malant for his second of the game. Luikkonen would score his third of the game for the natural hat trick at the 6:44 mark to put the Warriors up 3-1.
Rylan Brady made it 4-1 at 9:01 for his team leading 16th. Joey Delgreco’s 11th of the year came on the power play to make it 5-1 Warriors which signaled the end of the night for IceRays netminder Lukas Malant, who had been solid to that point despite what showed on the scoreboard.
Patrik Jurcak came in on relief, his second action in the crease as an IceRay. The Warriors would add two more goals to give them a 7-1 lead after 40 minutes, and tallied twice early in the third to make it 9-1.
Continued success on the power play was the silver lining for the IceRays, thanks to Forselius’s goal in the first. The final shot count for the IceRays was 12. They’ll have to ramp up that category if they hope to bounce back against the Warriors tomorrow night.
