IceRays Downed by Wranglers 7-1

Mar 24, 2023

Amarillo, TX (March 24, 2023) – The Corpus Christi IceRays fell to the Amarillo Wranglers 7-1 at Budweiser Bull Pen on Friday, March 24th, 2023.

Game Action

The IceRays did a good job of weathering a first period surge from the Wranglers in the opening 20 minutes, thanks in large part due to the stellar work of Lukas Malant in net, who stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced. Zack Kent broke the ice with his fifth goal of the year with a minute to go in the first period to put the Wranglers up 1-0.

The IceRays flipped the script to start the second stanza as Anthony Cafarelli hit the post on a breakaway and it was Nils Forselius who jammed home the rebound for his 13th goal of the year just 56 seconds into the period. Lukas Malant continued his solid play which included stopping an Amarillo penalty shot early in the period. The IceRays seemed to find their stride as the period carried on but the next two strikes belonged to the Wranglers. Chase Davis beat Malant upstairs on a nice shot at the 14:48 mark to put Amarillo up 2-1. After Dylan Contreras hit the crossbar nearly making it a 2-2 game, Wranglers forward Jack McDonald found Preston Brighton in alone who made it a 3-1 game. It was a much better period for the IceRays despite heading into the locker room down 3-1. They outshot the Wranglers 17-13 in the second period.

The IceRays had a couple power play opportunities early in the third period but were just unable to generate much noise on the power play tonight unlike they did in the comeback against Odessa last weekend. The Wranglers held a tight 3-1 lead until they exploded for four goals in the final 4:40 of regulation, getting tallies from Cooper Rice, Ronan Walsh, Pierce Patterson, and Ben Ivey.

The IceRays were 0-for-6 on the power play and gave up two power play goals to Amarillo in the final five minutes of the game, including a 5-on-3. The Wranglers have now thrown 50 pucks at Lukas Malant in consecutive 7-1 wins against the IceRays.
