Corpus Christi, TX (Jan. 6, 2023) – The Corpus Christi IceRays’ losing streak extended to nine as they fell to the Odessa Jackalopes at the American Bank Center on Friday, January 6th, 2023.
It was the Jackalopes who lit the lamp early in the first period in this one, as Brendan Finn beat Lukas Malant on a wicked wrister off the post and in for his second goal of the weekend series. IceRays Captain, Michael Casey, wasted no time and was able to knot the game at one less than two minutes later after his pass deflected off of a Jackalope defenseman and past netminder Gergely Orosz.
Dayne Hoyord finished a back-door pass for his third of the year to put the Jackalopes up 2-1, and then IceRays’ winger Jackson Beach pounced on a rebound less than a minute later for his second of the year to tie the game at two.
The Jackalopes came out flying once again to start the second period as Ryan Mansfield picked up his 14th of the year on a nice feed from Ryan Kelley to give the Jackalopes the 3-2 lead. Although not as quick to answer, the IceRays were able to tie it at three thanks to a great effort from Logan Neilson who beat Orosz for the second game in a row at the 10:36 mark.
The Jackalopes would strike early once again to begin the third frame, and it was JR Perdion putting them up 4-3 for his eighth tally of the year. Emerson Goode extended the lead to 5-3 on his team-leading 16th of the season at the 14:46 mark, and Cameron Dunn scored an ENG to make it 6-3 at 19:35 for his first of the year and completing the two-game sweep for Odessa.
Each team was 0 for 1 on the power play. Gergely Orosz turned aside 28 of the 31 shots he faced. Despite the loss, Lukas Malant was sensational in net for the IceRays as he recorded a season-high 57 saves on 62 shots.
