IceRays Fall In Home Opener Against El Paso

Sep 23, 2023

Corpus Christi, Texas – There’s no place like home is a feeling that we can appreciate.

Unfortunately for the Corpus Christi IceRays, there’s another feeling that is quite familiar, a one-goal loss.

The IceRays fell to the El Paso Rhinos 3-2 Friday at the American Bank Center.
Corpus Christi (1-4) has lost three one-goal games, and there could’ve been another had it not been for two empty-net goals.

Medrick Bolduc gave El Paso the lead with his second goal of the season at 12:04 of the third period on a 5-on-3 power-play for the game-winner.

“Not the start we wanted at home,” IceRays head coach Sylvain Cloutier said. “It’s tough losing the game at the end on a 5-on-3.”

Tory Lund and Camden Bajzer netted the other goals for El Paso.

Pierson Sobush and Mathieu Bourgault scored the goals for the IceRays.

Lund got the scoring started with his second goal of the season at 2:40 of the first period.

The IceRays lit the lamp with a pair of goals in the second period less than 2 ½ minutes apart as Sobush collected his second goal of the season at 5:16 on the power play to tie the game at 1-1.

Bourgault gave the IceRays a 2-1 lead at 7:34 with his second goal of the year.

Bajzer tied the game at 12:04 and it was 2-2 at the second intermission.

El Paso outshot the IceRays 40-33, including 18-11 in the second period.

The IceRays will have an opportunity to bounce back as they will host the Rhinos again on Saturday night at 7:05 at the American Bank Center.

“We need to get back to work tomorrow and be consistent for 60 minutes,” Cloutier said. “It’s that simple.”
