IceRays’ First Game of 2023 Spoiled by Jackalopes

Jan 5, 2023

Corpus Christi, TX (Jan. 5, 2023) – The Corpus Christi IceRays lost their 8th game in a row at the hands of the Odessa Jackalopes at the American Bank Center on Thursday, January 5th, 2023.

Game Action

Another great start for the IceRays as Anthony Cafarelli knocked home the rebound for his fourth of the year to give the IceRays a 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game. The synergy between Logan Neilson and Dylan Contreras continued to manifest as Neilson put the IceRays up 2-0 after snapping home a drop pass from Contreras, beating Odessa netminder Gergely Orosz top shelf.

Any rust that the Jackalopes may have had after being idle the past three weeks quickly wore off, however, as Emerson Goode and Tanyon Bajzer scored twice in less than a minute to tie the game at two.

Bajzer got his second of the game to put the Jackalopes up 3-2 at the 5:11 mark of the second period. Play quieted down for a bit but things got frantic towards the end of the period. Stepan Kuznetsov roofed a backhander for his team-leading 10th goal to tie the score at three. The Jackalopes would cash in on another two quick strikes in the final minute, including a buzzer beater by Marc Fletemeyer, putting them up 5-3 after 40 minutes.

Ryan Kelly would add an insurance goal halfway through the third period for his second point of the game, and then William Marshall’s empty-net goal made it 7-3 in favor of Odessa.

The IceRays were scoreless on five power play opportunities tonight despite some good zone time, and killed off all four penalties that they were assessed. The IceRays outshot the Jackalopes 44-39 in the loss.
