IceRays Look to Bounce Back After Ugly Loss to Warriors

Jan 28, 2023

Oklahoma City, OK (Jan. 28, 2023) – The Corpus Christi IceRays’ next game is tonight, Saturday, January 28th, 2023 at Blazers Ice Centre. Puck drops at 7:15 PM CDT against the Oklahoma Warriors.

Recap of Last Game

The opening game of the weekend series was one the IceRays want to quickly put in the rearview mirror. The Warriors’ speed and skill was evident right off the opening draw. They swarmed the area around Lukas Malant’s crease, creating secondary scoring opportunities and were rewarded with the first goal of the game at the 6:37 mark of the first period.

The IceRays could not have responded any better when Nils Forselius tied the game on the power play less than two minutes later. Lukas Malant kept it a 1-1 game heading into the second period, but things quickly spiraled downward for the IceRays.

Oklahoma’s Mikko Liukkonen struck twice early in the second period to complete the natural hat trick and make it a 3-1 game. After the Warriors took a 5-1 lead, Patrik Jurcak came in to replace Lukas Malant in net for the IceRays, his second appearance of the season. The Warriors would add two more goals before the end of the period to lead 7-1 after 40 minutes. Two more tallies in the third period made it a 9-1 game and that was your final.

The IceRays know they can be a lot better defensively and that they’ll need to get more pucks towards the net if they want to bounce back against this very good Warriors team tonight.

Players to Watch

Nils Forselius continues to shine since becoming a member of the IceRays less than just two weeks ago. He recorded four assists over his first two games against Lone Star last weekend and notched his first goal last night, which was the lone tally for the IceRays. Forselius has fit in seamlessly with Anthony Cafarelli and Jackson Beach on the second forward line and has relished the opportunity to play on the first power play unit. Look for him to contribute once again tonight and down the stretch for the IceRays.

In just his fifth game with the Warriors, winger Mikko Liukkonen recorded four goals including a natural hat trick last night against the IceRays. The Finnish native was all over the ice from the opening puck drop until the final horn. Look for him to be a difference maker yet again tonight for Oklahoma.
