ICERAYS TO PARTICIPATE IN BE BOLD GLOW GOLD FAMILY 5K RUN/WALK

Aug 26, 2014

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Corpus Christi IceRays will participate in the Be Bold GLOW Gold Family 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, August 30 at North Beach Dolphin Park as part of their efforts to support Brooke’s Blossoming Hope for Childhood Cancer Foundation. The event kicks off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which runs through the month of September to help raise awareness for those affected by childhood cancer.

“It is with great pride that the IceRays will kick off the Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by leading the 5K Glow Run where players and staff will participate in the run,” said IceRays General Manager Pat Dunn. “Brooke has amazed us in many ways. She is a firecracker. She brings us hope and courage. We are thrilled to be able to take part in this great cause. We send the word out to everybody to come out and support the event.”

Brooke’s Blossoming Hope began after Brooke Hester was diagnosed in November 2010 with Stage IV Neuroblastoma, a high risk stage of the nervous system cancer that spreads to lymph nodes, bone marrow, bones, the liver, and other organs. Her mother, Jessica, started the foundation to not only empower others to raise awareness for childhood cancer but also raise money for research and early detection efforts.

“We are incredibly honored and humbled that the entire IceRays hockey team is running in our black light glow run to support our global nonprofit efforts in the fight against childhood cancer,” said Jessica Hester, Executive Director & Founder of Brooke’s Blossoming Hope, and mother of Brooke. “It shows what extraordinary compassion we have right here in our home Corpus Christi community and how when people come together, an even bigger impact is made!”

In addition to raising funds, Brooke’s Blossoming Hope also provides young girls battling cancer with headbands and hats that have flowers, bows and feathers on them to help make them feel special during their treatment. Brooke also personally gives away blossoms to patients, family, and the public to aide in the effort. IceRays Athletic Trainer Rudy Rosas met Brooke and Jessica Hester by chance.

“Brooke handed me a blossom with a card, and that left a huge impact on me,” said Rosas. “I was then contacted by my friend, Jennifer Haynes, about helping raise awareness for the month of September. I jumped at the chance to help and knew the IceRays were the perfect forum for the public to be educated. We are excited for this opportunity.”

The Be Bold GLOW Gold Family 5K Run/Walk begins the efforts by the IceRays in support of Brooke’s Blossoming Hope. During the month of September, players will wear a blossom decal on their helmets for all seven games. At the IceRays hope opener on September 27 against the Lone Star Brahmas, Brooke will be handing out blossoms to fans in attendance and raising awareness. All proceeds from the game will go directly to the Brooke’s Blossoming Hope for Childhood Cancer Foundation.

“It is great to see that our local hockey team is supporting such a meaningful cause,” said Jennifer Haynes, who lost her son, Trenton, to Neuroblastoma. “By having them at our event, it will draw that much more attention to the run and to bringing awareness to childhood cancer. We are truly honored that they will be participating in this year’s event. To have the IceRays support our cause has meant so much to me personally as my son loved watching hockey games.”

The IceRays ask fans to show their support by registering for the event and raising awareness with the team. IceRays players and coaches will be at the event starting at 7:30 p.m. to sign autographs and meet with fans, as well as Stinger Ray and members of the IceRays Front Office. The run begins at 8:00 p.m. For more information on Brooke’s Blossoming Hope and the Be Bold GLOW Gold Family 5K Run/Walk, visit www.BrookesBlossoms.org.
