CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Lone Star Brahmas (10-2-1) forced a split with the Corpus Christi IceRays (10-3-1) on a 3-0 win on Saturday night at the American Bank Center. It was the first time the IceRays have been shutout this season. The Brahmas shutout the IceRays a total of three times last season in the eight game season.
The IceRays controlled most of the play in the first five minutes of the 1st period and drew the games first power play of the night when Brahmas Defenseman Charlie Emmons was taken off Holding. Corpus Christi was unable to convert and the Brahmas started to tilt the ice following the penalty kill and were rewarded with a power play themselves on a Stepan Kuznetsov cross-checking minor. After going 1-for-7 yesterday, the Brahmas came out with a purpose and Leo Bergstrom jumped on a loose puck and buried it in a wide open net to give Lone Star a 1-0 lead. 10 seconds later the IceRays found themselves in the box again with Lone Star looking to double dip and they would. Owen Kerr beat IceRays Goalie Nikita Volsky with a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle for his 5th power play goal of the season and sending the Brahmas to the dressing room with a 2-0 lead.
Bahamas Goalie Ryan Cameron made his first career start in the NAHL and made 12 of his 29 save shutout in the 2nd period. Neither side was able to muster up any offense in the middle frame despite the IceRays drawing a couple of power plays. The IceRays would head to the final period trailing the Brahmas by two.
Corpus Christi had some of their best looks in the 3rd period but nothing would find the back of the net for the IceRays. They had two more power plays in the final 20 but failed to convert as they went a combined 0-for-9 on the weekend. The Brahmas picked up their final goal of the night from Kristo Pitkanen sealing a 3-0 win for the Brahmas and a weekend split.
