MICHAUD BREAKS GOAL RECORD IN 3-1 LOSS TO JACKALOPES

Mar 19, 2015

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The Corpus Christi IceRays (29-22-5) kept it close heading into the third period but were snuffed out 3-1 by the Odessa Jackalopes (13-36-7) on Thursday night from the Ector County Coliseum. IceRays forward Wes Michaud’s 28th goal of the year breaks the all-time team single-season goals record set by Rudy Sulmonte back in the 2012-13 season.

The Jackalopes held possession in their offensive zone for much of the first period, specifically in the opening seven minutes. They outshot the IceRays 9-1 in that frame of time with a number of chances right in front of the IceRays net. Momentum favored the IceRays as the period wore on with the road side creating a few quality chances in their offensive end.

Despite both sides’ advances, scoring was held off until late in the second period with the Jackalopes taking the reigns. At 17:24, forward Corey Hoffman took a shot from the right circle that appeared to be saved by IceRays netminder Andrew Lindgren, but two seconds after the save the goal light went on and was supported about 15 seconds later by the officials, making it officially a 1-0 Odessa lead.

The third period started with two goals within the first minute of the frame traded by both sides. At 0:29, Michaud knocked in a centering feed from the low slot to tie the game, 1-1, and break the record. The Jackalopes came back at 0:58 to take the lead again, 2-1, thanks to Hoffman’s wide open tap-in from the right side. Odessa doubled their lead, 3-1, at 10:34 of the third period when forward Razmuz Waxin-Engback sped into the offensive end and sniped a top-shelf shot from the high slot. The IceRays pulled Lindgren late in the third period but couldn’t draw closer.

Jackalopes goaltender Tanner Creel (6-15-3) gains an impressive win, stopping 38 of 39 shots, while Lindgren (22-15-3) gets the loss, stopping 40 of 43 shots. The IceRays continue their three-game stretch against the Odessa Jackalopes on Friday, March 20 at 7:05 p.m. from the Ector County Coliseum.
