Corpus Christi, Texas – The Puck is about to drop…For Real.
The Corpus Christi IceRays, a proud member of the North American Hockey League, is set to begin the 2023-24 season against the Aberdeen Wings Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. CT at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
The season begins with a new theme. “We Are IceRays.”
“This is our house, our team, our community… We Are IceRays!” IceRays President Cassidy Lange said. “This theme encompasses a lot. We wanted to go back and highlight the original moniker for a season while also reminding the citizens of the Coastal Bend that we are here to stay and have been alive and thriving for 26 years. This is our team, our city, and our community.”
With a new slogan comes new hope as the IceRays look to start out fast against tough competition at the Showcase.
The IceRays finished eighth in the NAHL South Division in the 2022-23 season at 11-42-6, 1SOL, and 29 points, and showed scads of grit during the three-game preseason.
“We’re really excited as a group,” IceRays head coach Sylvain Cloutier said. “After a long practice and preseason, we just want to get things going.”
Among the top returning scorers for the IceRays are Nils Forselius, Stepan Kuznetsov, Anthony Cafarelli.
Forselius was second on the team with 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points in 51 games.
Kuznetsov (56 games) and Cafarelli (51 games) each netted 13 goals and added 12 assists for 25 points.
Aberdeen was second in the Central Division behind the Austin Bruins at 30-24-3, 3SOL.
“We don’t know much about Aberdeen, but we’re going out to start the first period and will make adjustments as we go along,” Cloutier said.
