RAYS REPORT #14: WEEKEND SPLIT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

The Corpus Christi IceRays split the weekend with the New Mexico Mustangs after winning Friday night in shutout fashion 4-0.  Sunday, New Mexico picked up a 5-3 win that included an empty net goal. 

GAME #1 – 12-16-11: Corpus Christi 4-0 New Mexico – All the scoring in Friday night’s game came in the first period of action only.  Starting the scoring for Corpus Christi was Zachary Lindsay who netted his second goal in the NAHL just 1:24 into the game giving the IceRays an early 1-0 lead.  Ladislav Hruska let a rocket go from the point and scored his first goal as an IceRays to give Corpus Christi a 2-0 lead 3:44 into regulation.  Eric Purcell scooped up a rebound and beat goaltender Randy Graham to propel the IceRays into a three goal lead.  The final goal of the game was tapped in by Joe Ginley who gave the IceRays a 4-0 lead after the first period.  Graham was replaced in net by Jake Stafford who was perfect the rest of the game however the Mustangs could not beat Anthony Stolarz who stopped all 32 shots he faced for his first shutout of the year.

 

GAME #2 – 12-17-11: Corpus Christi 3-5 New Mexico – The IceRays started hot once again in this game and it was Zachary Lindsay who sparked the scoring with his third goal as an IceRays to give Corpus Christi a 1-0 lead.  Michael Dery scored his first goal in the NAHL on a rebound in front of the new to increase the lead 2-0.  Dery then struck once again with his second goal in the game, and in the NAHL on another rebound goal for a 3-0 lead.  That would be all the scoring for the IceRays as New Mexico stormed back starting in the second period as Charles Baldwin made it 3-2 at the end of two periods.  Brent Lafayette pulled New Mexico within a goal and then on a penalty shot 6:26 into the third period, Evan Johnston tied the game scoring on Chris KommaJayson Angus went top shelf to give the Mustangs the 4-3 lead then New Mexico added an empty net goal to secure the 5-3 win.

SHUTOUT…Anthony Stolarz picked up his first shutout of the year stopping 32 shots as the IceRays scored four goals in the first period for a 4-0 win on the road Friday night in New Mexico.

FIRST GOAL…Ladislav Hruska notched his first goal in the NAHL on Friday night in the 4-0 shutout win.

FIRST TWO GOALSMichael Dery not only scored his first goal in the NAHL, but scored his first two goals in the NAHL on Saturday night.  Both goals were rebound shots in front of the net. 

PLAYOFF POSITION… With the win on Friday night, the IceRays overtook fourth place in the South Division which is the final playoff position.
