RAYS’ REPORT #17: DROUGHT ENDS OVER TOPEKA

Feb 3, 2013

The Corpus Christi IceRays went into Topeka and for the first time in three years beat the RoadRunners.  On Friday, the Rays’ defeated Topeka in shootout fashion 3-2 but fell on Saturday 3-1.  This week Corpus Christi hosts Odessa on Wednesday and Friday for “Pink the Rink” night!

GAME #43 – 2-1-13: Corpus Christi 3-2 (SO) Topeka – The scoring started on a Topeka power-play off the stick of Patrick Pollock from the left wing circle.  Pollock took a pass and wired a shot over the shoulder of Hayden Stewart for a 1-0 lead.  Beau Walker responded with a goal as he put a move on and back-handed the puck through the legs of RoadRunners goaltender Mackenzie Sawyer to tie the game 1-1 at 13:54 of period one.  In the third frame, Ryan McNeely forced an interception and walked in firing a wrister past the right leg pad of Sawyer to put Corpus Christi ahead 2-1 at 3:47 of the final period.  Drew Kariofiles answered back at 6:13 to tie the game up once again with assists from Jake Kamrass and Tyler Groat that eventually forced overtime.  In a shootout Charles Baldwin started the scoring with a nice move to put the Rays’ up 1-0.  To finish it off, Beau Walker back-handed the puck through the legs once again of Sawyer to propel the IceRays to a 3-2 shootout victory.  Hayden Stewart stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced.

GAME #44 – 2-2-13: Corpus Christi 1-3 Topeka –  The IceRays thought they led 1-0 after Wayland Williams scored on a two-on-one rush  with a  delayed penalty coming to Topeka, however the referee’s would decide the puck did not cross the line and the game remained scoreless.  The RoadRunners took advantage and struck first on the power-play at 9:03 of the first period.  Trace Strahle took a shot from the top of the left circle that Ben Myers got a piece of but trickled over the goal line for a 1-0 Topeka lead.  Tyler Groat gave Topeka a 2-0 lead with a wrap-around goal with just 49sec left in the first period with an assist to Drew Kariofiles.  To start the second period, Corpus Christi had a power-play and converted.  Mike Economos took a shot from the slot that went wide but deflected out to Emil Romig who put the IceRays on the board 47sec into the middle frame.  In the final period, Mike Gornall picked up the puck in the slot and beat Ben Myers as he was left all alone in front of the net at 9:26 of the third.  Ben Myers stopped 31 of 34 shots in the loss.
