The Struggles Continue for IceRays in OKC, Fall 8-3

Jan 28, 2023

Oklahoma City, OK (Jan. 28, 2023) – The Corpus Christi IceRays did not respond the way they had hoped as they fell 8-3 to the Oklahoma Warriors on Saturday, January 28th at Blazers Ice Centre.

Game Action

Game two of the weekend series could not have started much worse for the IceRays as Hunter Jones tallied for the Warriors just 12 seconds into the game. When Malte Hasselgren made it 2-0 after a power play goal, it seemed like a continuation of the game from the night before.

The IceRays started to find their skating legs later in the period and Connor Brust was Johnny on the spot to cut the lead in half as he capitalized on a juicy rebound and beat Nick Erickson five hole to make it a 2-1 game at 15:57.

The second period was another ugly one for the IceRays. It started with a goal from Kaden Nelson at 2:24 to put the Warriors up 3-1. Drew Sutton and Owen Baumgartner would each add a power play goal to make it a 5-1 Warriors lead which ended the night in net for IceRays’ goaltender Patrik Jurcak, Thomas Kiesewetter coming in on relief. The Warriors found the back of the net two more times before the end of the second and led 7-1 after 40 minutes just as they had the night prior.

Cody Kempf got on the board to make it 7-2 at 7:33 of the third period, but a shorthanded goal from Drew Sutton of the Warriors two minutes later made it 8-3 and added salt to the wounds. Anthony Cafarelli added a shorty of his own in the final minute of the game on a nice play created by Nils Forselius.

The silver lining is that the IceRays outscored the Warriors in the third period and let’s hope they can carry that into next weekend as they get set to host the Warriors at the American Bank Center. Thomas Kiesewetter also showed no signs of rust and made a number of fantastic saves after coming in to replace Jurcak in net for the IceRays.

The IceRays were 0-4 on the power play and registered just 14 shots on net.
